Refine Your Strategy

Highlight Class Projects

Add class projects to show how you apply your major. Include the project title and use bullets to show your process:

  • Purpose or problem
  • Scope (who/what/where)
  • Key decisions and why
  • Methods or analysis
  • Results or insights

Example:

Community Health Analysis Project

  • Selected 5-year public health dataset, focusing on high-risk communities
  • Applied epidemiological and statistical methods (trend and descriptive analysis)
  • Analyzed data in Excel to identify disparities by age and income
  • Interpreted findings and proposed two prevention strategies

Add Skills That Matter

Build a skills section that reflects your major and key career competencies. Group your skills and list specific methods, tools, and approaches.

Example (Humanities):

  • Research Skills (Critical Thinking): Archival Research, Textual Analysis, Discourse Analysis, Historiography, Literature Review
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Critical Theory Application, Comparative Analysis, Ethical Reasoning, Argument Development

  • Leadership Skills: Seminar Facilitation, Discussion Leadership, Peer Mentoring, Project Coordination
  • Technology Skills: Digital Archives, Omeka, NVivo, WordPress, Citation Management Tools (Zotero)

This helps employers quickly identify your academic expertise and how it applies in professional settings.

Add Experience That Shows Impact

Include experiences where you contributed over time—paid work, volunteer, family, or student organizations. Focus on what you accomplished.

Use bullet points that show:

  • What you achieved
  • How you did it
  • The impact

Example:

Peer Mentor, Educational Opportunity Program | Aug 2024 – May 2025

  • Led weekly meetings to improve group coordination, increasing project completion rates.
  • Developed a filing system to organize records, reducing retrieval time for team members.
  • Mentored peers to strengthen participation and engagement.

This helps employers quickly see your impact and contributions.
